It’s no surprise, then, that their most recent series, Becoming Elizabeth, is about England’s most famous queen, Elizabeth I. Unlike other films and TV shows about Elizabeth’s life, Starz focuses on the events following Henry VIII’s death, before she became queen.
Is Becoming Elizabeth based on a true story or merely speculative fiction? Here’s what you should know.

IS THE STORY OF BECOMING ELIZABETH TRUE?
Yes, Becoming Elizabeth is based on Elizabeth I, Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603. She was the last of the Tudors and the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.
She was the next heir to the throne at the time of her birth. Her parents’ marriage was annulled when she was two years old, and her mother was beheaded. Elizabeth lost her claim to the throne as a result of these events. Henry VIII had a son named Edward after his marriage to Jane Seymour.
Following Henry’s death, Edward takes the throne. The young king ruled for only a short time. Becoming Elizabeth takes place during this period of political upheaval.
In addition to Elizabeth, his half-sister Marie, born of Henry VIII’s previous marriage, was attempting to establish her legitimacy. There is also Lady Jane Grey, whom Edward wishes to succeed him.
Elizabeth’s relationship with Thomas Seymour is an integral part of the story.
Thomas marries Henri’s widow Catherine Parr after his death. However, he quickly befriends Elizabeth, attracting the court’s attention. Nobody is surprised by his advances on young Elizabeth.
Anya Reiss, the creator of the series, combed through letters, speeches, and anything personal she could find about the characters in the story during her research.
She didn’t want to make it up, preferring to keep things as accurate as possible. When the writers had completed all of their research and were ready to direct the series, they discovered a modern connection to the story.
Based on the extensive research and planning that went into the production of Becoming Elizabeth, it appears that the series will stick close to the actual events while deviating from accuracy where there is a need to condense information.
