Maciej Berbeka and Tomasz Kowalski started their ascent of the mountain, reached the summit of Broad Peak, and then started their descent.

The climbers’ radio communications with the base camp were unsuccessful. To conduct a search and rescue operation, a rescue team was sent.
However, the search for Maciej Berbeka and Tomasz Kowalski was unsuccessful, and bad weather forced the rescue effort to be abandoned.
Therefore, the pair is absent. Wielicki reported that the two climbers passed away on March 7, 2013, two days after the rescue team had discovered no signs of their existence.

The body of Tomasz Kowalski was found by his expedition hanging vertically at a height of 7900 meters. According to the group, Maciej Berbeka’s body was probably in a crevasse close to the 7,900-meter mark.
It was impossible to safely explore the crevasse and retrieve the corpse due to the dangerous weather, though. As a result, several media outlets reported that Maciej Berbeka and Tomasz Kowalski had passed away.
The precise cause of death, however, was not given. Maciej Berbeka and Tomasz Kowalski’s health was likely harmed by the poor weather conditions during the descent, which resulted in their deaths.
