Can you expect a Game Theory with Bomani Jones season 2 renewal after tonight’s season 1 finale on HBO? Is there more good stuff on the way?
We’ll be the first to admit that we were ecstatic about the show before it even started. We’ve been a huge fan of Jones since his first appearance on ESPN’s Around the Horn. We used to watch his show High Noon regularly. We knew we wanted this show to be a huge success from the start.
Wasn’t it? The truth is that success in the streaming era is extremely difficult to quantify. Detractors of Bomani will point to the show’s low traditional ratings and claim that this is the reason for its cancellation. The vast majority of potential viewers here, however, do not appear in traditional ratings; Game Theory has thrived and will continue to thrive if renewed, based on DVR viewership and streaming / On-Demand views. Unless they choose to do so in a traditional press release, HBO does not publicly release their HBO Max numbers for any of their programming.
We can easily say that the show did enough creatively to warrant a season 2. While the premiere felt a little disjointed at times, bringing in an audience for episode 2 significantly increased the energy and gave Jones’ program the perfect vibe. You’d find some great humor, as well as informative content and perspectives on sports that you wouldn’t find anywhere else. We’re not sure if we need the interview segments, but that’s due to the 30-minute format’s limitations. We’ve also grown accustomed to Jones’ free-wheeling conversations on his The Right Time podcast; it’s difficult to see those whittled down. (However, they are also a way to draw more attention to the show, so they may be necessary in that regard.)
Whether it’s a look at NFL coaching hires or the relationship between athletes and cryptocurrency, the specific segments are top-notch. Many of these are worthwhile to look into.
We’re hoping to hear more about a possible season 2 in the coming months, but HBO is unpredictable. This is not the type of place where commitments or decisions are made quickly or without much thought. Just know this: we want a second season. Jones, as well as his writers and staff, are deserving.
