IS THE STORY IN HOUSE OF THE DRAGON TRUE?
House of the Dragon is based on parts of Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood, which serves as a prequel to Martin’s epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, which is the basis for the immensely popular Game of Thrones TV series. Thrones.
As a result, House of the Dragon functions as a prequel to “Game of Thrones.” With dragons, magic, and other supernatural elements, the sprawling universe of “Game of Thrones” but House of the Dragon is not based on a true story.
Martin, on the other hand, drew inspiration from real history when developing various elements of the story. A Song of Ice and Fire, for example, is loosely based on the Wars of the Roses, a 15th-century civil war between House Lancaster as well as House York, both cadet branches of the Royal House of Plantagenet, to determine the next ruler of England.
The Targaryen civil war depicted in House of the Dragon will be remembered as “the dance of the dragons” and, more sinisterly, “the death of the dragons.” Martin revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con 2022 that he was inspired by the Anarchy period of English history.
Unlike the other books in the series, Fire & Blood is more descriptive than narrative. Martin wrote it as a world history book from the viewpoint of Archmaester Gyldayn of the Citadel of Oldtown.
“Little but bawdy tales and gossip, piling stabbings, betrayals, seductions, and debauchery on top of each other,” he says in his testimony. So, while Martin was inspired to write his book about real history, House of the Dragon is ultimately not a true story.
