We knew Moon Knight season 1 episode 4 on Disney+ would be big, bold, and crazy, but we didn’t expect to see a hippopotamus.
The final seconds of this episode introduced us to a brand-new character, not only for the Marvel Cinematic Universe but for all of Marvel. Steven Grant and Marc Spector encountered the Egyptian goddess of fertility Tawaret, who happens to be a talking hippo, while in the asylum (which may be a fabrication created by Harrow). Antonia Salib plays the character, and it must have been an exciting opportunity for her to create someone from scratch.
So, why aren’t both sides of Oscar Isaac’s character seeing her? It could simply be Harrow’s way of confusing the two of them and making them feel trapped in their current state of pain. As long as they are kept in this asylum, neither of them will be able to disrupt his plans.
Is it possible to argue that the hippopotamus is inappropriate for a show like this? Maybe, but Moon Knight has always been strange. It has remained largely untethered from the rest of the MCU, and we would argue that as a result, the overall end product has improved significantly. We do believe that we’re in for a couple of epic episodes in the future, and we also believe that Tawaret is far from the only surprise that awaits Marc and Steven in that asylum.

Haven’t we found ourselves in an interesting situation with Layla earlier in the episode? Marc was envious because she had just kissed Steven, but Marc was also keeping a secret from her about her father’s death. Things could get a little icy in the coming weeks…
