IS THE STORY BEHIND SEOUL VIBE REAL?
No, the plot of Seoul Vibe isn’t taken from a book or a true story. It does, however, have some elements of truth. The movie was directed by Hyun-Sung Moon using a screenplay by Sua Shin. According to Moon, the 1980s were a pivotal period in South Korean history and were thus the ideal choice for the movie’s setting. Read this to learn where Seoul Vibe was filmed.
The project appealed to actor Yoo Ah-in, who plays Dong-wook in the movie because of the challenge it presented. Go Kyung-pyo, who portrays Woo-sam, claimed that he joined the production to collaborate with Ah-in.
Moon and his coworkers did extensive research for the show in 1988. The Olympic component exists. Seoul served as the Olympic host city in 1988. General Jeon, one of the movie’s antagonists, was probably modeled after Chun Doo-hwan, a military dictator who held power over South Korea’s government between 1979 and 1980.
He was elected as South Korea’s fifth president in 1980, serving in that capacity until 1988. He wasn’t in office when the Olympics were held, as the movie demonstrates, but Roh Tae-woo, the current president, would have been one of his allies.
This is also hinted at in the series. Seoul Vibe’s creators undoubtedly used history to set the scene for their movie, but in the end, this one isn’t based on a real event.
