THE ENDING OF THE EMPRESS SEASON 1 IS EXPLAINED!
When a high-ranking member of their cabinet informs Maxi at the end of Season 1 of The Empress that Franz’s plan has worked as well as the Russians are retreating, the whiny brother refuses to call off the plan before speaking with his mother. Sophia tells Maxi in front of him that all the men in her life are weak and unfit to be Emperor.
As a devoted wife, she ruled for years, but Elisabeth played along to maintain control. This is where the two plots meet. Franz refuses to see his wife, and Maxi arrives while she is being treated in her room.
She tells her brother-in-law that her mother wants Elisabeth to leave, stunned by the world spinning around her.
As Elisabeth sits on the floor, he comforts her by telling her that soon there will be a change and also that he wants the Empress by his side in a forbidden romance classic. They kiss, and then she walks away.
Ava arrives at her side near the end of Season 1 of The Empress, still pretending to be a lady-in-waiting. She examines the Empress as well as discovers that she is expecting a child.
When Elisabeth tells Franz about the wonderful news, she can’t say anything because he accuses her of plotting behind her back.
Elisabeth decides to return to Bavaria. Everything you need to know about the release of Season 2 is right here.
Finally, Ava stabs Egon, her handler, in the back. It is assumed that she informed the Royal Guard of the Emperor’s assassination plot.
They kill him on the spot, shouting “for the people!” Ava’s other contact, Elsa, confronts her and tells her that she will be killed immediately if she leaves the compound.
Before Amelia can expose Ava’s impersonation, Ava pushes her over a palace railing, and Theo arrests Maxi for treason, or so we think.
Season 1 of The Empress concludes with Franz pursuing Elisabeth, who eventually exits her carriage and runs into the crowd of angry citizens blocking the door.
She walks among them, empathizing with them and even taking a few in her arms.
A servant informs Sophia that she has informed the crowd that she is pregnant, which will earn her sympathy and popularity.
